This year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, with a field of 12, began with a surprising turn of events and concluded with a dramatic finish.
As the gates opened, Scylla (#4) broke sharply and immediately took command of the race. The favorite, Seismic Beauty (#8), settled into third on the outside, while Nitrogen (#1) tracked from fourth along the rail. Japan’s entry, Alice Vérité (#6), found a position mid-pack on the inside.
Scylla picked up the pace entering the far turn, extending her lead as she entered the final stretch. Her stride never faltered as she entered a league of her own, leaving the battle for second place far behind. She crossed the finish line with a commanding lead of over four lengths. Nitrogen held on tenaciously to secure second, while Regaled closed from the back of the pack to take third.
In her second consecutive attempt at the Distaff, Alice Vérité raced in the middle of the field but lost ground at the crucial moment, unfortunately finishing in the rear. She was unable to improve upon her fourth-place finish from last year.
Winning jockey Junior Alvarado reflected on his masterful ride: “I was determined to run a bold race.
